Geologists are like kids in a playground on nearly every road trip. Long car rides offer landscapes to imagine Earth’s changing crust and travel through road cuts that give a clear view of the underlying geology.
Many times, exposed outcrops have their outer surfaces heavily weathered from precipitation and vegetation, and don’t offer a great look into the true surface of the rocks. Road cuts then give a clear view of the rock formations’ true colorations and features.
Perhaps on the extreme end of road cuts and exposed geology along a road occurs within the Ugab Valley in Namibia. The geology creates extensive cliff faces and exposes some incredible underlying folds.
